When something is flushed it begins the long journey to a wastewater treatment facility. Toilet paper, which is made from short cellulose fibers, is easily broken down during the journey and can go straight into the sludge digester tanks. Other products, such as ‘flushable‘ wipes, paper towels and tissues, do not break down throughout the journey. This can lead to immediate repercussions for landlords or homeowners (blockages causing backups into homes), or long term repercussions for the entire wastewater system (clogged pipes, blocked screens).
Help us keep our systems functional and safe by limiting your flushing to toilet paper and fecal matter. For everything else, toss it in the trash!
